7 Quick Takes, Take 13

Visit the original “7 Quick Takes” at Conversion Diary. Jen does this much better than I do.

I’m going to Indonesia in three days!

Saya akan pergi ke Indonesia Senin depan!

My final opinion on the Obama - Notre Dame conflict: No. Obama should not have been invited there. He should not be honored. He should not speak. This is wrong.

Remember, people, it’s about honoring him. This is not an occasion for “dialogue” about abortion, nor is it an opportunity to teach the president what the Church believes about the beginning of life. We either believe that abortion is a horror and a sin, or we don’t. If we do, we have no business giving an implicit blanket approval to anyone who’s pro-abortion. I’m not saying that Obama might not prove to be a reasonable, even a good, president in other matters — but that’s completely beside the point.

Some useful links to groups and individuals who express this far better than I do:

  • NotreDameScandal.com, with its petition signed by more than 350,000 names to date.
  • NotreDameResponse.com, organized by ND student groups.
  • ReplaceJenkins.com, organized by Notre Dame alumni urging fellow alumns to withhold donations to their alma mater.
  • StopObamaNotreDame.com, now featuring a statement from Dr. Alan Keyes
  • I’d link to the statements from more than 50 US bishops if I had room.
  • A letter from Mary Ann Glendon, who was due to be honored at the same ceremony as President Obama. She declined for reasons of conscience.
  • A video statement by Fr. Corapi

There are far too many sunscreen choices in the stores. None of the labels say “Best choice for medicinally-sensitized skin under three weeks of equatorial sun”. How am I supposed to choose?

You’d think it would be relatively straightforward to come up with a system to store the various hours of operation for a set of university libraries on a website. But it’s not … it’s really not.

I have a screensaver that shows random cover images of books I own. It’s connected to my LibraryThing account. Except that for the past two days, it’s been piling up infinite pictures of the same book: Slow Reading. I’m starting to wonder if there’s a message there.

I’m occasionally scared by the way that some people just step out into oncoming traffic around here, completely oblivious to the truck or bus or car whose driver is, luckily, slightly more aware of what’s going on. And I’m often amazed that there aren’t more vehicle-pedestrian accidents.

Now that classes are over, the students are starting to disappear from campus. Cornell acquires a sudden atmosphere of peace and slight laziness. Summer really is the best time to be here.
