Notre Dame and Obama
The petition at Notredamescandal.com, calling for that school to rescind its invitation to President Obama to receive an honorary doctorate at its May Commencement exercises, now claims more than 160,000 signatures — over ten times the total number of students at Notre Dame itself.
I signed it. The attempts to defend the invitation, by various Notre Dame students, alumni, and university president, are rather disingenuous. They variously claim that (a) this would not honor Obama for his anti-life agenda, and/or (b) this would instead be a ‘teaching moment’ for a frank exchange of views. But that’s nonsense. Of course the awarding of an honorary degree honors the recipient, and of course it carries with it an implicit endorsement of the recipient’s behavior. There’s no way around that.
I have a feeling that Notre Dame will not uninvite the President now, but I hope that the protests continue unabated all the way up to the event itself. Obama’s campaign promises, actions in office to date, and rumored future plans show that he is no friend of the Catholic Church. In this year of St. Paul, dear Lord, let him experience conversion.
